Protein Synthesis Kit

The Human Heart
What is the direction of flow of the blood through the human heart? How do the great vessels connect to the heart, and where do they go? This kit includes the heart with the four chambers exposed, and the aorta, vena cava, and pulmonary arteries, which must all be attached. Red and blue arrows show circulation, and red and blue (deoxygenated) erythrocytes allow students to take the blood cell on its journey through the heart, switching from the deoxygenated cell to the oxygenated one at the appropriate place.

Macromolecules Desk Kit
Students can build carbohydrates, both generic and specific, as well as lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. With the nucleic acid monomers, DNA and mRNA can be formed and replication and transcription can be enacted. An ATP molecule can also be formed and lose a phosphate to release its stored energy.

Cell Membrane Desk Kit
Students investigate cell transport using the phospholipid bilayer, "ion channels" (one can be used as an aquaporin if desired), cholesterol molecules, and sodium-potassium pump, along with ions, water molecules, glucose, oxygen and carbon dioxide. The worksheet directs students through various types of passive and active transport for a variety of substances.

Kelp Forest Food Web Desk Kit
Produced in response to teacher requests, this kit shows organisms of the Pacific coast kelp forest. Students can arrange them into food chains on a magnetic markerboard and then interconnect them into a food web, drawing the appropriate arrows between with a dry erase marker (not included). Dry erase marker will erase from this material. Kit includes 20 different organisms plus three additional kelp pieces to assemble, background information on natural history and feeding habits of the organisms, suggestions for use and further research, and a key showing an assembled food web.
